Gabriel Iglesias Zoomed with Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday, July 8, and shared how his hit Netflix series, Mr. Iglesias, was inspired by his real life.
Mr. Iglesias follows Gabriel as a hilarious high school teacher who tries to make a difference in the lives of some smart, but underperforming students, at his alma mater.
âItâs a lot like me and believe it or not, I was actually in line to be a school teacher,â Gabriel shared with Seacrest on-air. âI took a course in high school called âExploratory Teachingâ and we would go to elementary schools and teach lesson plans to young students and the teacher told me âI think youâre going to be a really good teacher.â And I said, âMy lesson plan was horrible. Why do you say Iâm going to be good?â And she said, âOh, no, I agree, your lesson plan was horrible, but you were able to do something the other students werenât able to do: you were able to get their attention.ââ
Gabriel added that he had a âgiftâ so they even offered him a scholarship at Long Beach Unified School District.
âClearly I chose a different path,â Gabriel added. âBut I had that opportunity.â
Teaching though is what kick-started his comedy career.
âI didnât realize I was doing standup in the class,â he shared of how he secured the kidsâ attention. âThe kids were just glued to me. ⊠I was already performing and I didnât realize it.â
