Chris Harrison Hires High-Profile Lawyer Amid Hiatus From 'The Bachelor'

It looks like things are about to take a dramatic turn behind the scenes of The Bachelor.

Back in February, Chris Harrison sparked a controversy when he publicly defended The Bachelor contestant Rachael Kirkconnell's previous racist actions, including attending an antebellum plantation-themed fraternity party in 2018. Harrison made his controversial remarks while speaking with Rachel Lindsay—the reality dating franchise's first Black Bachelorette—during an appearance on Extra.

Following the backlash, Harrison released an apology stating that he now understood that by making excuses for Kirkconnell's actions he was ultimately defending racism. He then announced he'd be taking a temporary step back from the franchise in order to "evolve" and become "a better man."

Though Harrison would be stepping away from the franchise that made him a household name, the longtime host made it clear he intended to resume his role on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette in the future. Last week, however, ABC announced Tayshia Adams and Kaitlyn Bristowe would be co-hosting back-to-back seasons of The Bachelorette.

On Sunday (March 21), a source close to Harrison confirmed rumors he has hired lawyer Bryan J. Freedman from the Freedman & Taitelman firm. Freedman previously represented Gabrielle Union after she was let go from America’s Got Talent after one season. Union was reportedly let go from the show for making official complaints about racist incidents taking place on set. After hiring Freedman, Union and NBC “reached an amicable resolution” over her dismissal.

Harrison hasn't taken any legal action against ABC at this time, nor has he announced any intention to do so. ABC hasn't made any public statements about Harrison's future with the franchise, either.
