Michael Evans, this year’s Tuition Giveaway winner

POPLARVILLE – Pearl River Community College student Michael Evans is breathing a little easier today after winning the 2018 PRCC Tuition Giveaway contest, a full year of free tuition.

Evans, 19, a sophomore, will attend the Forrest County Center in Hattiesburg this fall. He is the son of Mike and Nilda Evans.

“Winning this scholarship is something special to me,” said Evans, a 2016 graduate of Purvis High School. “It's something I've looked forward to, and actually winning makes me happy. I'm grateful that this opportunity and others like it exists for students like me.

“After graduating, I plan to get a job in the field of electronics.”

Evans was selected as the winner of the eighth annual Tuition Giveaway contest, a promotion PRCC held in conjunction with Hattiesburg Coca-Cola United and radio stations SL100 and Wild 106.3.

Live radio promotions, featuring free soft drinks and t-shirts, were held to advertise the contest in Hattiesburg, Oak Grove, Petal, Purvis, Sumrall, Columbia and Poplarville.

Contestants had to tell their story through online submissions.

“Michael Evans is the kind of student who never complains; he demonstrates impeccable attention to detail and listens to constructive criticism,” said Dr. Terri Ruckel, dean of the Dr. William Lewis Honor Institute. “Michael fulfills 100 percent of his commitments. I have greatly enjoyed working with him and watching him grow.”

Evans has been a part of the following student organizations and honor societies:

Beta Tau Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa - Vice President of Scholarship.

Sigma Kappa Delta English Honor Society – President.

Mu Alpha Theta Math Society – member.

History and Humanities Club - Vice President of Humanities.

Music Club – President.

National Technical Honor Society – President.

“Michael is an amazing student and person who regularly volunteers for outreach and service projects,” said James David Collum, program director for PRCC’s Electronics Engineering Technology department. “In the classroom, he regularly tutors students who may be having difficulty and leads by example demonstrating excellent practical skills to match his academic capabilities.”

The Tuition Giveaway contest has grown in popularity each year.

“We had many student applicants who have had to overcome challenges and adversities,” said Chuck Abadie, public relations director at PRCC. “We have more and more submissions each year. Picking a winner was very difficult.”

Russ Hendley, On Premise Sales Manager for the MS Division of Coca-Cola United, said he was thrilled with Evan’s selection.

“Michael Evans is so very deserving; active in school functions and organizations, volunteers his time freely to help make a difference. He truly leads by example. So it is only fitting that he emerges as this year’s selection.

“On behalf of the entire Hattiesburg Coca-Cola Sales Team we congratulate Michael on his selection and we all wish him the very best as he continues his educational journey. Coca-Cola United is very proud to be a partner in the PRCC Tuition Giveaway Promotion and we look forward to continuing this tradition and helping more young people advance their education at Pearl River Community College.”
